Within the golfing community there are courses in every city that are considered “must plays.” The type of golf experience that you save for special occassions such as when you have out of town guests and you are looking to really WOW them. Since it opened in 1972, Arrowhead Golf Club in Littleton, CO has often been voted one of the best Public Courses in the Denver area.
The Robert Trent Jones Sr./Robert Trent Jones Jr. designed golf course is routed through a garden of red rock spires and formations that provide for a truly unique and memorable golf round. The course sits on the extreme south western edge of the Denver sprwal, tucked into a quiet valley immediately against the Front Range. The Chatfield Reservoir preserve to the north and the Roxborough State Park to the east means that there is an abundance of wildlife that crosses and calls the course home. Everything from turkey, deer, elk and even bears are often commonplace and only serve to add to the experience.
At just over 6,600 yards from the championship tees, Arrowhead is a short golf course by modern Colorado standards. There are several Par 4’s out here that are even reachable for those long-hitters which adds an exciting risk/reward factor while playing. Be warned however, wayward shots will find deep and thick Colorado scrub oak that will make it a challenge to even recover your ball let alone present an opportunity to hit a golf shot. The course designers have skillfully used the terrain to provide an added chellenge when hitting your approach shots into firm and lightning quick greens.
Aside from the remarkable beauty, the speed of the greens will be your biggest take away after your round. Often times you will find yourself with a lengthy come-back putt due to the subtle slopes combined with the closely mown and well maintained putting surfaces. Given that these greens are often elevated and hidden from your view in the fairway, getting the ball to stop next to the pin will be the challenge to scoring well!
All of this beauty an notariarty does add to the price tag for your round however. Tee times during the “prime times” will be north of $100 per person. There are some great mid-week and twilite deals to be had if you take the time and plan ahead for your tee time. Just like anything else in life, you get what you pay for. The course is always in immaculate condition, the staff does and outstanding job from the moment you drop your bag off until you leave the property. The course carts have GPS to help facilitate your round and even order food at the turn. This is an upscale, full-service facility that takes pride in how they treat their guests on a daily basis. It is definitely a reputation well-deserved as one of the finest golf facilities in the area!
